Have you seen Amelia?

This chapter begins with letters written by Tomas Hlava to Amelia, a typeface designed by Stanley Davis in 1965. What started as invented writing became an obsessive search: random sightings, friends sending photos, online rabbit holes, neighbors' mailboxes, and a trip to Saugerties, where Davis once lived.
The installation presents what was found along the way. Original sketches and documents collected from his house. A message from Amelia herself. A table he designed, rebuilt by the artist's father. A demolition video of his house, watched by hundreds of thousands.
Everything is displayed as evidence of the search itself, where Amelia the typeface and Amelia the person continuously blur. Each object is accompanied by excerpts from the letters Tomas wrote to Amelia between March and October 2024. The complete correspondence is available in the publication, Saugerties, New York, USA, Saturday, October 5th.
Visitors enter the search alone, each tracing their own obsessive path through the letters and evidence, following clues where curiosity pulls them. The story refuses to settle into a single narrative. Instead, it builds from scattered pieces, asking visitors to trace the line between what was imagined and what was found.

Tomas Hlava is a graphic designer originally from the Czech Republic. He works primarily with typefaces, their contexts, and histories across visual identities, book, and editorial design. He received his MFA in Graphic Design from the Yale School of Art, a BA from the Gerrit Rietveld Academie in Amsterdam, and a DiS. from VOS Scholastika in Prague. He is currently based in New York City and works as a freelance designer.
